RLHP is committed to mobilizing public opinion and lobbying with the government for the eradication of child labour and ensuring the fundamental right to education for all children. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989, guarantees all children the right to survival, protection, development and participation. India ratified this convention in 1992. Despite this, according to CACL and other sources, more than 70 million children are employed in our country in various sectors, with their childhood and innocence lost forever.

Since its inception, RLHP has spearheaded the campaign against child labour in slums. Through various child centred education programmes, 90% of child labour has been eradicated. Of the 56 slums that RLHP works with, 39 are now totally child labour free slums. |

Extending the campaign against child labour beyond slums, RLHP at the State level hosted the Campaign Against Child Labour-Karnataka (CACL-K) from 1998-99 and at the National level the central secretariat of the Campaign Against Child Labour (CACL) from 1999-2003. CACL is a network, covering 17 Indian states, of over 6000 child rights groups, social activists, trade unions, advocates and concerned individuals working for eradication of child labour and ensuring the right to education for all children. |

CACL is involved in advocacy and lobbying, monitoring of national and international developments related to child rights, intervention in cases of child rights violations, mobilizing public opinion and media sensitization. It was contributive to getting the 93rd Constitution Amendment Bill passed as 86th Bill ensuring fundamental right to education for all children of 6 to 14 years of age in India. Hundreds of child labourers across the country have been rescued. Greater sensitization on the issue is created among the public and the government officials. |
