RLHP runs two residential rehabilitation homes for the street children of Mysore, Asha Kirana for boys and Asha Bhavana for girls. Mysore City has more than 700 children living on the streets. RLHP decided in 1992 to start a rehabilitation programme for these street children.


RLHP has emerged as a resource center and imparts training on social work to other NGO representatives, Social activists and students Anubhava, a training center for human development was inaugurated on 3rd September 2003

  A Seminar on decentralized approaches to wastewater treatment in Chamrajnagar

 
With a view to disseminate knowledge on decentralized waste water solutions and provide a platform for engineers and experts to discuss various aspects related to decentralized approaches as a solution for on-site wastewater treatment in cities, an introductory seminar on ‘Decentralised Approaches to Wastewater treatment’ was organized by Rural Literacy and Health Programme (RLHP), Mysore on 7th October 2009 at Samudaya Abhivrudhi Seva Kendra in collaboration with District Administration, Chamrajnagar supported by BORDA-CDD, Bangalore.

A total of 53 participants participated actively in the seminar including officials from various departments including Agriculture, Corporation, Deputy Commissioner office, Health, KSPCB (Karnataka pollution control board), town panchayat, Horticulture, Urban development, KUWS&D, engineers from taluks, Zilla panchayat, and lecturers and students from Engineering college and JSS College. Posters on various aspects of DEWATS were displayed for dissemination.

Mr. Raju K. the Deputy Environmental officer, KSPCB (Karnataka State Pollution Control Board), in his key note address highlighted the evolution of laws and standards related to water and environmental pollution, and emphasized the need for decentralized solution to tackle the sanitation problem in Chamrajnagar. Mr. Venkatesh from RLHP, presenting the Case study on CBS-DEWATS in Roopanagar slum, Mysore, focused on the crucial role and importance of people’s participation in sanitation.

Mrs. Gayathri from CDD presented various aspects, principles, functioning, and advantages of DEWATS with clarity. Following this, Mr. Andrews Jacob, CDD presented the sanitation mapping, describing the process involved in the mapping.

The participants opined that the concept and technology of DEWATS were good, and the technology would be more useful in rural areas.
 
Workshops on Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS) towards policy changes

As a measure to influence policy makers and key senior government officials for incorporation of decentralized sanitation solutions in policies and bylaws at state and district levels, Karnataka, one day State level seminar was conducted in Bangalore on 2nd August 2008 by RLHP in collaboration with FEDINA and CDD, Bangalore. Officials from key government departments participated.

Two One day district level and taluk workshops were conducted in Mysore and Hunsur on 19 Nov and 26 Nov 2008 respectively. Officials from concerned departments were introduced to the concept of DEWATS.

The process for inclusion of DEWATS in policies at Karnataka Government level has been initiated.
Silver Jubilee Programme

On completion of 25 years of committed service from 1984-2008 for the development of marginalized and downtrodden poor, RLHP celebrated the Silver Jubilee on 20th December 2008 at RLHP premises. More than 600 people from slums including street children, NGOs representatives, dignitaries and newspaper reporters formed the strong gathering. Shri V. Srinivas Prasad, MLA, the Former Central Minister, together with Rev. Dr. Thomas A. Vazhapilly, the Bishop of Mysore, Mr. George Chira, Coordinator, South Asia TdH (G) and others inaugurated the programme.



Mr. Joy Maliekal, one of the founders of RLHP, shared the development of RLHP during 25 years. Mr. V. Srinivas Prasad, Mr. George Chira and Most Rev. Dr. Thomas A. Vazhapilly, the Bishop of Mysore appreciated the contribution RLHP had made to the society in terms of health, education and child development. Later, Mr. George Chira released RLHP’s Souvenir, and Shri Lingadevaru Halemane released RLHP’s book ’Reclaiming Human Dignity -25 Years of Journey’. Dr. Gerry Pais, a senior social activist and Mr. M.K. Bhat a senior development consultant also applauded RLHP’s service to the urban poor.
