Story of Anitha ...

Life of cruelty  never seemed to end for Anitha, a 6-year old girl from Mysore. A sense of abandonment crept in after her father’s death. She did not like to go for begging, which her mother living on street forced her to do.  She would ruefully watch other children who were clad in good clothes, playing, studying and having good times. One day as she was begging near the bus stand, the staff spotted her and brought her to the shelter after talking to her and her mother. Once in the shelter, she was put under nutritious food treatment and given health care, love and counselling. Slowly she gained her normal weight, and smile reappeared on her face. Other children now enjoy her company. With school bag slinging on her shoulder, off she goes to school every day to study 1st standard.

Raju's Story...When Raju's mother died of illness, his father remarried. Raju was 10 years old then. His father was not too kind. He forced Raju to work in the field, and abused him for silly reasons. His step mother did not care about him a bit. Fed up with this, Raju ran away from home and landed in remand home in Chennai. Later, he came to Mysore and, with doing tricks with monkey, he survived on the alms he got. When he came to Asha Kirana, initially he was rude to others, and had few bad habits. The staff gave him sustained counselling and non-formal education. Gradually, he became more cooperative and friendly with other children. With staffs’ support, he appeared for 7th standard exam privately and passed, and later, joined the regular school. After successfully completing his 10th standard, he is happily studying 1st P.U.C.

PROGRAMME
Home for Street Children

RLHP is committed to withdraw children from street and re-unite them with their families.

Asha Kirana
Mysore City has more than 700 children living on the streets. RLHP decided in 1992 to start a rehabilitation programme for these street children. Asha Kirana began as only a night shelter for boy street children, but was converted to a residential home for these children in 1996.
In June 2005,the shelter was shifted to own building near T.Narasipura, about 20 km from Mysore. Nearly 450 children have benefited from the shelter programme so far. At present, about 40 boys consider Asha Kirana their home.
Asha Bhavana
Asha Bhavana, started in 1999, is a 'home of hope' for the girl children living on the streets of Mysore.

The number of girl street children in Mysore is less than the number of boys, but they are more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation and are forced into begging or sometimes into the flesh trade. Asha Bhavana currently houses 23 girls. Asha Bhavana now has a own building in Srirampura, on the outskirts of Mysore. Thanks to TdH and BORDA for supporting the construction of the building.
