kanakmma's story. . . I had three children to provide for and eked out a living by selling fruits. I had to borrow from a moneylender just to keep the family afloat and was caught in a vicious debt trap. In spite of these problems, I started saving little amounts in the local self-help group initiated by RLHP and took a loan of Rs. 5,000/- to improve my business. The trade flourished; I was able to repay the loan taken from the moneylender as well as the self-help group loan. Recently, I took a further loan of Rs. 10,000/- to start a fruit stall in Chamarajanagar. I am now the proud owner of a house and I got my daughter married.

PROGRAMME
  Water Supply project in Jalahallihundi

I am Mahadevamma in Jalahallihundi. We are 197 families in our village. For many years we had water problem. We women had to get up at 5 am everyday to fetch water from faraway places. The water was not enough to wash clothes and clean our homes. We took bath once a week and used to get many diseases for which we had to spend money. We requested RLHP to provide us with drinking water supply. RLHP with the support of BORDA provided us 2 borewells and 5 water tanks with taps. Now we have sufficient water for daily bath and washing clothes. We women also have time to go to work and earn money.”

Jalahallihundi is a village in Chamrajanagar district, Karnataka, South India. It is about 60 Km from Mysore. It is a dry spell prone area with acute water scarcity. In response to people’s need, the water supply project was launched in 2009. As part of basic needs services measures, BORDA took initiatives to mobilize financial support for the project from ‘Bremen East-Asian Association’, Germany.

RLHP organized the community and mobilized community participation in the entire project. People were involved in analysis of needs, planning, implementation and monitoring of the project. Each family contributed to the project through labour, and continues to contributes Rs. 10 per month towards operation and maintenance.

The community selected sanitation committee members who appointed a care taker for operation and maintenance. The water project with 2 borewells and 5 water tanks was officially inaugurated on 26th November 2008. Health and hygiene educational inputs were provided to enable people for proper utilization of water, and maintenance of personal hygiene and health.

With adequate water supply, people have water for household and personal purposes. Now women have time to engage in other works, and children go to school on time.
